A Study for the Moderate Drinking Campaign in Group Health Practice
Jung Moon-Hee

Abstract
This study was designed to grasp the meaning structure of drinking and the meting for dining together among the workers in small and medium sized workplaces. The survey was conducted on four subjects; two blue-collar workers and one manager who worked in a gilding factory in Seoul and one nurse placed by an occupational health management agency. Profound interviews were given to them from April 15 to Flay 14, 2001. The recorded data were analysed according to the phenomenological method suggested by Giorgi. Thus, a total of 99 statements were derived from the data. They were categorized into 23 subthemcs and seven main themes respectively. Finally, three centre meanings were derived from them. 1. The first central meaning, ¢¥value of dining together¢¥, consists of two main themes; ¢¥intcrpxrsonal relationship¢¥ and ¢¥pattern of drinking¢¥. The former is made up of such subthcmes as ¢¥one drink¢¥, ¢¥reason¢¥, ¢¥desire¢¥ and picture¢¥. The latter is composed of such subthcmes as ¢¥opportunities¢¥, ¢¥drinking capacity¢¥, ¢¥expenditure¢¥ and personality¢¥. 2. The second central meaning, ¢¥process and ending of dining together¢¥ is conceptualized into three¢¥ main themes such as ¢¥drinking etiquette¢¥, ¢¥declining¢¥ and ¢¥getting drunk¢¥. The first theme, ¢¥drinking etiquette¢¥ is conceptualized again into two subthcmes such as ¢¥observing etiquette¢¥ and ¢¥disregarding etiquette¢¥. The second theme, ¢¥declining¢¥, is conceptualized into 6 subthcmes such as ¢¥behavior¢¥, ¢¥revealing¢¥, ¢¥lying¢¥, ¢¥excuse¢¥, ¢¥facial expressions¢¥ and ¢¥atmosphere¢¥. The last theme, ¢¥getting drunk¢¥, is conceptualized into such subthemcs as ¢¥good drinking behavior¢¥ and ¢¥the next day¢¥.
3. The third central meaning, ¢¥improvement of drinking habits¢¥ is clarified by two main themes such as ¢¥knowledge on health and diseases¢¥ and ¢¥workplace regulations¢¥. The former is composed of the subthemcs such as ¢¥knowledge on drinking¢¥, ¢¥health attitude¢¥, and ¢¥resources¢¥. The latter consists of such subthemcs as ¢¥regulations¢¥ and ¢¥expectations¢¥.
In conclusion, to anchor down ¢¥moderate drinking¢¥ habits in workplaces, campaigns should be conducted multidimensionally, based on the experiences and cognitive structure of workers. It is most important for chief managers to set a good example of moderate drinking in the meeting for dining together. The main activity of a health manager lies in building a social support network in workplaces.
